Water Meter Replacement Program

The Municipality of Jasper is beginning a community-wide program to replace aging water meters in homes and businesses throughout the town.

Water meters measure the amount of water used at each property and are used to calculate water bills. Many of the meters currently in use in Jasper are reaching the end of their service life and need to be replaced.

Upgrading these meters helps ensure the water system continues to operate accurately and efficiently while supporting the long-term reliability of Jasper’s water services.

The Municipality has contracted Metercor to complete this work on our behalf.

There is no cost to residents for the meter replacement.

Why water meters are being replaced

Many of the water meters currently in use in Jasper are aging and nearing the end of their service life. Replacing them helps ensure the community’s water system continues to operate accurately and reliably.

The new meters being installed will help support:

  • Accurate billing
New meters measure water use more precisely, helping ensure residents are billed fairly for the water they use.

  • Early leak detection
The upgraded meters can help identify unusual or continuous water use, which may indicate a leak. Detecting leaks early can help prevent property damage and unnecessary water loss.

  • Improved system monitoring
Upgraded meters help the Municipality better understand overall water use in the community and support long-term water system management. Residents will have access to a personalized online account where they can view their water consumption and set notifications for unusual or higher-than-normal usage. This can help residents better understand their water use and identify potential leaks early.

Will My Water Bill Increase?

The new meters measure water use more accurately.

For most households, this change is not expected to significantly affect water bills. However, because the meters measure water use more precisely, some residents may notice small changes depending on actual water usage.

The updated meters will also help residents better understand their water use and identify potential leaks or unusually high usage.

What this means for residents

A Metercor technician will need to access the water meter inside your home or building to replace it.

In most homes, the water meter is located in the basement near the hot water tank or where the main water line enters the building.

The replacement typically takes less than one hour to complete. Water service will need to be briefly shut off during the installation. Metercor technicians will carry identification and will only attend your property once an appointment has been scheduled.

When is this happening?

Water meter replacement work is scheduled to start mid-May of 2026

Scheduling your meter replacement

Residents do not need to take action right now.

When it is time for your meter to be replaced, you will receive a letter from Metercor with instructions on how to schedule your installation appointment.

Appointments will be available during extended hours to help accommodate different schedules.

An adult (18 years or older) must be present at the property during the installation appointment.

Preparing for your appointment

To help ensure the replacement can be completed quickly and safely, residents will be asked to:

  • Ensure the area around the water meter is clear and accessible

  • Confirm the control valves on either side of the meter are working properly

  • Ensure an adult is present during the appointment

Additional instructions will be provided when scheduling your appointment.

Yes. The meters meet all applicable safety standards.

They use very low-power wireless communication (similar to common household devices) and only transmit small amounts of data for short periods of time.

The type of meter installed depends on the size of your water service and how water is used at the property.

  • Most single-family homes will receive a smaller meter (typically 5/8” or 1”)

  • Larger buildings, such as commercial properties or multi-family developments, generally require larger meters to handle higher water use

In some cases, smaller meters may also be used in commercial settings, depending on the building’s water needs.
