Water Flushing

What does water flushing do?

  • keeps water lines free of biofilms and sediment build up
  • checks the mechanical operation of each fire hydrant
  • stirs up and flushes sediment out of the system

Due to limitations on the system, some sediment will remain, causing discolored water.

How will water flushing affect residents?

You may experience periods of low water pressure and/or discoloration of water during flushing. If you experience discolored water, run your cold-water tap until it clears. During periods of discoloration, postpone washing clothes and limit your use of hot water until the cold water clears.

Drinking Water Results

The public can access the drinking water results of all communities using the e-reporting system on the Regulated Drinking Water website

Albertans can view sampling results for indicators that have direct impact on human health. The public can compare other indicators of water quality.

Alberta Environment Inspection Reports

The Regulated Drinking Water website includes reporting on inspections completed by Alberta Environment on all drinking water systems holding an approval or registration.

Lead

New Provincial Requirements

In March 2019, Health Canada lowered the maximum acceptable concentration (MAC) for lead in drinking water and modified the sampling point.

The Alberta Government has created a 2 phase approach to properly deal with lead in drinking water.

What We Are Doing

As part of phase 1, the municipality is gathering and analyzing 40 lead samples from residents, with a focus on the most susceptible areas.

In July and August of 2021, Municipal employees went door-to-door asking residents in susceptible areas to provide a water sample from their kitchen tap to test for lead in water.

The Municipality of Jasper has been testing for lead in water for the last four years and has consistently found results under the maximum acceptable concentration (MAC).

The below map shows the areas that are most susceptible to lead in water.

Do you have a lead service pipe?

  • Find the emergency water shut-off or water meter in your home (generally found in the basement).
  • Check the color of the pipe coming out of the ground. If the pipe is:
  • The color of a Canadian penny – it’s copper
  • Blue or black – it’s likely plastic (polyethylene)
  • Grey – it’s galvanized iron or lead
  • The next step is to check for pipe hardness - don’t attempt to check the hardness of your pipe if you suspect it’s plastic!
  • If it’s a lead pipe, you will be able to etch gently into the pipe with a sharp-tipped object

Even if you find no evidence of a lead service pipe, there is a small chance that a section of lead piping could be present underground.

Simple Steps for Good Water Quality

  • If you haven't used water in 6 hours or more, run the cold water tap for at least 3 minutes to flush the system.
  • Never use water from hot water taps for drinking or cooking. Use cold tap water and heat it up.
  • If you are using a water filter, be sure to maintain and replace it regularly
